Hmmmm…generic whiteness

I came across THIS (which I can’t believe I didn’t see before, this is something I think ALL writers need to read) and it really got me thinking. If you read the post it isn’t surprising if it leaves you thinking, anything who is even half awake should end up with gears chugging away in their head after it. It’s hard as a writer not to consider your own writing when you read something like this. So, yeah, I went there. Here are some of my thoughts, lj cut for the disinterested.

Wiscon panel idea

  • Feb. 6th, 2009 at 1:39 PM
Don't Panic
After playing my muse with time in the sun (and cold…brrr) and feeding her some chocolate custard with peanut butter and brownie bits, I have a title for a panel…now I need to write the description. (sigh)

“Getting it wrong gracefully”

I want to not only talk about the logistics of writing about folks unlike yourself, especially when coming from a place of privilege compared to the characters you’re telling the story about, but I think it’s also important to talk about how a writer handles the inevitable moment when what you’ve written offends someone else who has lived their life far closer than you to the character you’ve written about. What to say and what not to say, and in the case where you stumble over your brain and get defensive, how to pull yourself back to recover with a sincere apology. I want to say all of these things, but I have no idea how to word it.

---

Update: It's been reworded and sent.

“Getting it Wrong Gracefully”

There’s an antiquated idea among the age old writing tips that an author should only write what they know. Stepping outside what is familiar is not impossible, not if you really want to make a difference. In the world of spec fic, authors have the freedom to go beyond what they know to create endless possibilities within their fiction.

The purpose of this discussion is to not only talk about the logistics of writing about folks unlike yourself, but to talk about how a writer handles the inevitable moment when what you’ve written offends someone. What to say and what not to say, and in the case where you stumble over your brain and get defensive, something we all are guilty of at one time or another, how to pull yourself back to recover with a sincere apology.

One more thing…

Was Thinking
Because of having a great deal of craziness in my life, and just being damn tired of drama as a whole (I mean like physically tired, could be messed up thyroid meds not helping as well) I’ve not made the post that’d been spinning around in my head regarding this whole cultural appropriation discussion and the topic of writing the "Other".

I chose to speak on this now, and ask for folks to forgive me if I ramble. My ADD brain has been chewing on this all for days and days and there’s a lot of info out there to get out. That and two kids home from school are a huge distraction. I will do my best to follow some semblance of order in my thoughts. It’s long, you have been warned.

It seems we are not to be kitten free for long. Six foster kittens arrived last night, most done with a horrible case of a respiratory infection from their time at the shelter. I was up past midnight brushing, trimming, giving meds, feeding, etc… and getting all of the kitten into their sleeping area. Once the cold is gone they’ll get daily play room time, but for not they need peace, rest, and time to adjust. If you want to know more about the new kittens feel free to visit the link below.

On a writing note, I was able to finish my vampire erotica short for a anthology I am submitting to, and my article on building secret societies in paranormal fiction is up at Women and Words blog for your enjoyment.

People keep asking me about what Nanowrimo is and why I do it every year, so I wrote my thoughts on why I think the November Writing event is so useful a tool for a new or even more experienced author.

DWW - Introduction "We're Here!"

DWW1
Well I talked about doing this a bit, but now it’s up and the first post is live. The site is called Dreamtime’s Writers Workshop and the name says it all. Now I won’t say I know it all about writing, I won’t even say I know a lot, but there are a great many things I have learned in the past three years of writing I hope others will find useful as well. I know I’ve been taking about way to make extra cash and writing free articles is not the best way to do this. I look at the situation this way. This will not only help other hopeful authors, but give me practice writing topic oriented articles. I do have a donation button on the site in case someone really likes what I wrote and wants to give back, but it’s not mandatory.

The first article is called In the Beginning, part one “Getting Started” and it’s all about places to get ideas and inspiration, as well as harvesting the muse energy to your best advantage. I’m interested at what ya’ll think.

Okay over the week I’ve looked at ways to use writing to bring in some extra cash to get my family over this financial crunch we are in. Thanks to all the folks that gave me such great suggestions. I am posting some here not only as a reminder to my self and a way to get input from all of you, but also for any of you that might be looking at ways to ease your own money burdens. This is a long post, but I hope very useful.

Here's a heads up from Women and Words blog...

"The folks over at Bedazzled Ink have a pretty informative workshop set up for fiction writing basics. Definitely worth a little look see if you are interested in improving your craft."

Now from what I can tell this is an ongoing blog project, so I expect if they keep it running there will be regular post with lots of different tips.

Andi Marquette did a piece recently (for this blog I am thinking though her's is not on thiers yet) that is not to be missed.  "Elements of Writing: Point o’ View!"

Marketing on a Budget

  • Jul. 27th, 2008 at 8:28 AM
Was Thinking
With my first anthology out (Chilling Tales) and a novel due this fall (Ancestral Magic) I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to the idea of marketing. Being with a small publisher, a lot of the promotion lands on my shoulders, and not having a ton of extra cash to spare, I have to be frugal with the marketing tools I use. Some of these I have been working on for quite some time, whole others are new tools since the anthologies release or resources geared to the novel as its date of availability get closer. Whereas any artist can use these tool to promote themselves, as a writer I will mostly be focusing on that aspect.

The internet itself is a great tool to give your work widespread attention. There are no gas or plane fares to dig into your pocket book, you simply have the world at your fingertips. What you do with this connection is up to you. Here are some suggestions.

Also, as part of this special event there are some other authors doing workshop on their blogs worth checking out.

Sandra Barret is doing “Worldbuilding with a Wiki” Tuesday, July 29, 2008 ([info]sbarret). Jove Belle is doing a not to miss workshop on “Brainstorming” Thursday, July 31, 2008, And the magnificent Larkin Rose is doing a piece called “Hitting the Wall” on the subject of Writer's Block Saturday, Aug 2, 2008

I’ve been informed by LJ that there are no more that 50 link allowed, so I am forced to skim some off of the writer’s link page since I’m hoping to add some authors I recommend to the side bar. If I took off one you all think is of vital importance, let me know. I’ve listed the ones removed here so folks can add them to their memories sections if they want.
