Some progress

Writing
It took some relocation of workspace (coffeeshop rather than home) but I finally got some writing done today. I’m up to chapter 7 in Natural Rebirth (sequel to Natural Order) which is a start at least.

16892 / 100000 words. 17% done!

I finally finished the revisions to Bloodstained Innocence, even with the sick kidlets and all slowing me down. It’s gone from a polished copy back to a rough version now, but we are down to two POV character all the way through and from 65k to over 72k words so not a bad start. Time to send the whole thing off to the betas so it’s ready to seek an agent in May or so. I’m serious. I’m hoping to take this one mainstream. If I can pull that off it will bring more attention on the lesfic work I have as well as be good for the future of Bloodstained Innocence.

Crap it’s almost the end of March! Where the heck did the month go? I’m plugging away on Bloodstained Innocence, and now realize I have yet to send the first three chapters to betas so I can have them ready for the Wiscon Writers Workshop before April 1st. Damn. Okay, anyone out there have time today or tomorrow to look over less then 10k of a non erotic bi paranormal piece?

Good news! I got the review pdf for Ancestral Magic and my edits for Nashoba’s Hope, so I’m off to be a well behaved author for as long as I can mange it and get some work done. No one move forward with the revolution without me (wink)

PS: There's Silk Exotic post coming about what I learned (a LOT) on my research adventure, and the highlights. I am very excited hearing back from a couple of the dancers whose blog I read and who I emailed to ask if I could use some of thier (tonight at the club) stories as scenes (in part) in my book if I gave proper credit and they happily said "sure!"

Unusual Research Question #1

  • Mar. 4th, 2009 at 7:45 AM
Was Thinking

Okay, I'm stepping away from the asshatery going on over the internet to focus on the demands on my insistant muse. I'm sure all the crap will still be there when I return. *sigh*

I need to know a bit about the inner workings of an exotic dance/gentlemen’s club for a couple of project I am gearing up for. I need to know aspect from the business end of it, the dancers, the bouncer, the DJs, the bartenders; any help me get a more complete picture. I have a bouncer friend who worked at several places in Seattle 20 years ago, and a few dancers who did short term work about the same time, but I need a more current view of the industry then they can provide.

I called the local gentleman's club (the one with the best rep), but haven't heard back on what day would be the least evasive to come in and look around, ask questions, etc....if any. I figured a mention in the dedications page, and a one my blog would be good promo for them. We’ll see what they think. If they are uncooperative, then I might have to get more creative in where I get my research. I do like to be thorough.

Can anyone help?

Pondering farwells and question

I’m having a challenging day trying to wrap my brain around something beside what happened this afternoon. For now I’ll talk about something else outside the cut, and spare you all.

I’m thinking about doing the Samhain Publishing bondage call, but would like suggestions of good resources and book involving light bondage content that I can use as part of my research. I don’t want anything intense because it won’t fit the tone of the story I’m doing, but something more playful would work well.

Okay, I’ve gotten to chapter 6 in my work on Natural Rebirth, the sequel to Natural order. That puts me at…

I figure if I can pull off one chapter a day I can have the rough draft finished by the end of March. Beta schedules allowing, that’d means it’d be ready to head off to the publisher by end of summer. I’m hopeful that edits for Worlds Collide begin about then, so that’d be good timing.

I’m months behind on getting Shadow Magic out to the publisher, and I’m thinking I can’t wait any longer for the last beta’s notes since that’s the reason the submission is so far behind. Soon as I finished this synopsis (I hate doing synopsis) off it’ll go.

Natural Order
Okay, I finally got through the publishers edits (first run anyway) for Natural Order and sent those back, and am now looking at Shadow Magic (sequel to Ancestral Magic), and thinking it may be ready to be submitted to the publisher. This sinus infection is still killing me, but I have to get this done. If all goes well I’m be starting on Natural Rebirth (sequel to Natural Order) this week and hopefully that’ll be ready to send in by Wiscon time this May. I’ve scanned my short story submissions list, and I think the queer sci fi call from Queer Fiction, and the f/f wedding bit may be all I tackle this week. Those are due round the end of the month.

As much as I’d like to have stuff out in anths so that I have more name recognition with folks, I don’t want to stretch myself too thin. I have a novel I’d like to have ready for the Wiscon writers workshop, so that means it has to be ready to go by mid next month. It’s mostly written (Bloodstained Innocence) but I’m thinking if it want it to really have a shot at mainstream markets I have to make some hefty revisions which takes time. I had great comment from reader on the possible openings to be used, and I think the Chi one won out over all. That also means I need to look carefully at the numbers of POV scenes, adding some in Chi’s POV to even things out. That’ll be the hardest part I think.

Update on Bloodstained Innocence: Okay I've moved stuff around and I don't think I have to add as many Chi POV scenes as I though, and the ones I do have to add I am completely seeing how they fit in (yea!). So, this will be far less painful than I thought. Hurrah for Moontime creative juju! Right now Bloodstained Innocence is at over 65k and I'm thinking it'll be closer to 70k or even 80k when I'm finished with the revisions.

Okay I need some advice. I need to know which of these pages is a more gripping first page one for a novel, since I am dealing with 2 POVs in this book. Keep in mind, these is in mid revision, so there’ll be editing bugs, but I want to see where the new revision should begin.…

I joined a new writing group today that looks like fun, meta writer, and an thinking about what I need to catch up on. I got my edits in for Natural Order, and hoping I feel well enough to start tackling those today. I did not only get some thought on things to fix with Bloodstained Innocence, but considering doing a prequel novel or two for Oh It’s Magic to center more on how Juniper gets the shop. You see, she grew up in some really bad foster home and spent years as an exotic dancer after running away to earn the money for the magic shop…I was thinking starting the first book from the time just before she gets the shop, while she’s still a dancer. As far as BI, I think I'm going to switch out all the other POV I was using and just do the story from Ashante and Chi's POV, to show how each are affected by the other entering thier life.

A call out for assistance

  • Feb. 3rd, 2009 at 8:48 AM
Was Thinking
I have several novels and short stories in the works, and I find myself dangerously low on betas. Being a writer with ADD and dyslexia and depend heavily on my betas to whip me and my work in shape. Several of my betas have their own careers as authors now, and I am thrilled for them. Two of my skilled betas recently started dating each other, one just days after breaking up with me (sigh…no pity party Moon).

I do not need betas to pat me on the back. I love for betas to tell me what they like about my work, but I also need to know what is wrong as well. I take pride in sending out as clean a piece of work as I can manage. I need both folks who are good at spotting proofing issues and folks who can tell me when the flow is off or a character is not feeling real to them.

Warning, I write a lot and often need prompt return on work sent to a beta so I can have several betas read it before a deadline submission. I write mostly paranormal, and some though not all of my work has sexual content, though I am rarely crass in my descriptions. What I need if a dependable core of betas who like my work well enough to read regularly. In truth I’m grateful for any help I can get.

Anyone interested please email me and let me know what kind of betaing you prefer, and whether you read lesfic only, or if you are willing to read in the rare cases my muse send me something else. I’m giving myself a few days to feel sorry for myself with hot baths and chocolate and World of Warcraft before getting back to work, so I look forward to hearing from some of you.

One more thing…

Because of having a great deal of craziness in my life, and just being damn tired of drama as a whole (I mean like physically tired, could be messed up thyroid meds not helping as well) I’ve not made the post that’d been spinning around in my head regarding this whole cultural appropriation discussion and the topic of writing the "Other".

I chose to speak on this now, and ask for folks to forgive me if I ramble. My ADD brain has been chewing on this all for days and days and there’s a lot of info out there to get out. That and two kids home from school are a huge distraction. I will do my best to follow some semblance of order in my thoughts. It’s long, you have been warned.

It took some juggling after no replies from betas who had the story, but "No Boundaries" is completed and off to the readers for the Coming Together: Against the Odds anthology. The deadline is tomorrow, so hopefully all of you who wanted to submit stories to this worthy cause have done so (hint hint).

I Do
My habit of being only on the short list but never making the final cut for an anthology call seems to be at an end. (I hope permanently :P ). I just found out I made it into the “I Do” charity anthology project created by [info]alex_beecroft  and several others. All profits of the sale of the book to go to the Lambda Legal Fund and all Printing and distribution costs have been donated by MLR Press

Writing for cash?

  • Oct. 6th, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Sucks
I know for many this is an ongoing wish, but with financial issues slamming up on the face like a bird against a window lately, I’m forced into the situation of looking for ways to bring in more money for the family, which still doing my writing and taking care of my kids. Crazy. Are there ways to make some cash writing without the long wait for the royalties from a novel (my first is coming out soon, but it looks to be delayed). Flashfiction, short stories, anything even article writing. I am wanting some ways to help my family without giving up my passion, my writing. I know none of those will bring relief right away, but if I can do that kind of writing and work part time that might be enough to bail us out from under these medical bills. Thanks for any suggestion you all might come up with.
