I’m getting the last of the packing done for
wiscon and making arrangements so the kitties are taken care of while we’re gone. Once again we get to spend the nicest weekend (weather wise) for a while indoors at a convention *sigh*. I’m gonna have to find time to hit the Farmer’s Market on Saturday. I’m on the second version of this post (the first being eaten when the power burped) so hopefully I don’t forget anything.

I am so looking forward to
wiscon , especially in the melancholy of the past few days since Oddcon. My 6 year old, goddess bless her, thought it’d be fun to dump out all the capsules from her brother’s ADhD meds down the back stairs, a mistake that just cost us $200 we couldn’t afford. Fortunately we still have time to rearrange the cash to afford the Wiscon hotel still, and hopefully to pay the photo shoot I had scheduled while there. Looks like the book buying budget will be less this year.
On the bright side, here’s the most recent version of my Wiscon schedule. As you can tell I have Saturday and Sunday free (I’d rather be on panels, but what can ya do) . I still have a couple panels, a reading, and the Sign Out. Not sure what the anonymous deal in the first panel is though.

I don’t know if I remembered to mention it, but my story “A Taste of Inspiration” has been accepted by Shadowfire Press, and I just finished all of the paperwork for it (except for the contract which will go out tomorrow). It feels good to get that done, knowing what a pile of things I have slotted to do tomorrow. One project is I have is to decide whether I am sending the first three chapters of “Bloodstained Innocence” or “White Lotus” in for the Wiscon Writers Workshop this year. Which ever one I decide on has to be worked on this week so I can get it in before the April 1 deadline.
Now some of my friends have been waiting for my report regarding my first visit to an erotic dance club. Well, wait no more. I’ll leave the next section beneath the cut for those who do not wish to hear of my debauchery (heheh) I apologize now to typos and the like, but a lot of this came out in a rush from my head, which was full of the experience.

After playing my muse with time in the sun (and cold…brrr) and feeding her some chocolate custard with peanut butter and brownie bits, I have a title for a panel…now I need to write the description. (sigh)
“Getting it wrong gracefully”
I want to not only talk about the logistics of writing about folks unlike yourself, especially when coming from a place of privilege compared to the characters you’re telling the story about, but I think it’s also important to talk about how a writer handles the inevitable moment when what you’ve written offends someone else who has lived their life far closer than you to the character you’ve written about. What to say and what not to say, and in the case where you stumble over your brain and get defensive, how to pull yourself back to recover with a sincere apology. I want to say all of these things, but I have no idea how to word it.

“Getting it Wrong Gracefully”
There’s an antiquated idea among the age old writing tips that an author should only write what they know. Stepping outside what is familiar is not impossible, not if you really want to make a difference. In the world of spec fic, authors have the freedom to go beyond what they know to create endless possibilities within their fiction.

Looks like a couple of my eggs might be hatching which is a good thing.
Another good thing is finding out my story “Untouched Perfection” made it into the “Coming Together: Al Fresco” anthology. I can’t list the other authors (yet) since they are still being notified, but I am thrilled to find my story and so many wonderful authors I’m familiar with made it in. This is going to be a great anthology!
I’m mulling over program ideas for Wiscon since the deadline is tomorrow, so good wishes for the practical side of my muse to surface and help me in this task. If any of you all have already submitted panel ideas around the Fail 2009 topics in hope of stirring up positive change, please send me a private poke so I don’t rehash what you’ve already set in motion. :)

Now I know for many of you the new year comes the first of January, but for people of the Dianic tradition and many others who have ties to Celtic heritage the festival on October 31st marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the new year. Within my own Cherokee heritage this time of year is also seen as a time to turn inward, to prepare for the coming winter and for a time of dark and quiet when families come together to tell stories and to suggle safe from the cold. For these reasons and more I find this time of year a comforting time to look within and seek the paths I wish to take in the coming year.

Well, here is the third part in my Wiscon tale, hope you've enjoyed the journey. Note: I had a good deal of trouble finding some panelist sites, so to make sure I get the right ones let me know what link to add if you see your names.
Okay, the boy is still sleeping, poor thing, and the girl is up and active. She doesn’t seen sick to me anymore, but better to be safe then sorry. So, now before I head off to eat something while I have the chance, here’s Saturday’s update.
( Saturday )
No chance of writing today, my son is down with the flu, and after my daughter showed possible symptoms at school yesterday (still) I had to bring her home. For the good of all (except me) looks like they are home for the rest of the week. So, seemed as good a time as any to finally do my Wiscon post. :) It’s long, but it was such a packed weekend for us no way to avoid that without breaking thing up into days, which I did.
