Update and Green Monday: Making Tofu

  • Jun. 8th, 2009 at 9:57 AM
Was Thinking
Decompressing a bit today about surviving my first solo reading and pouting over the cool weather when I was hoping for summer temps. I have a new (new to me anyways) vintage bike I’m looking forward to breaking in and want some nice weather for my first official ride. It’s my first bike and I’m looking forward to getting used to riding. Please forgive if there's a ton of typos today, my brain's a tad distracted lately as am I.

I also got a reminder from Outpost that my order of soy beans is in and it got me thinking about making my own tofu. I’ve found since I stopped eating meat I’ve had some grilled and sautéed tofu I really liked and am looking forward to learning how to prepare it myself. I really need to cook more and tightened the food budget with needing to pay off bills and prepare to afford school this fall.

Thanks to [info]pegkerr  for the heads up on this one.

Now these only work during the day, but wow in an area where you get a good amount of sun year round and have a workshop or windowless place you need lit, this could be very useful.

Green Monday: Fashion

Now those who know me can tell you I’m not big on the fashion scene, but lately as I am thinking about the author appearances I have to promote Ancestral Magic, it’d let me down the road to wishful musings about what clothing I’d buy if I had the funds. Now, since I was unable to find the videos I needed for today’s topic, I’m going to cheat a little and mix my musings on personal fashion with environmental concepts.

Green Monday: The Green Bus

  • Mar. 23rd, 2009 at 11:22 AM
Gaia2
I have to thank [info]volunteerheart  over at [info]green_future  for the head up on this one. This is a show headed up by Brigit Strawbridge, of the BBC TV series 'It's Not Easy Being Green. The whole point of this is she wants to show folks how easy and inexpensive sustainable living can be. She buys a double-decker bus, and uses it to display sustainable living in an environmentally friendly manner. The first two episodes I’ve found is about them setting up the bus and the details that went into this project. I get the feeling there are more episodes, I just didn’t find them on Youtube.

You can check out more information on The Big Green Idea at their website. Warning, it’s extensive, so you can get easy distracted for hours longer than you’d intended. I know I did. The Idea Sheets alone sucked me in for half that time.

Now I know with the economy sucking the way it is lately that gift giving during the holiday this year will be a slimmer prospect for many, us included. Rather than wallowing in regret I thought it might be fun to show you all some of the things I would like to get if money wasn’t an option. I think folks will find some of these fun.

I’ve been thinking a lot about eating better, trouble is my mother was a single mom so most of our meal growing up came from a box, and my grandmother who cooked from scratch was not a patience teacher. So, my challenge is to learn basic cooking stuff later in life without paying tons of cash for lessons. Here are some vids I would say are the top of the ones I found that I learned a lot from this week.

Long but fun post ahead )

Okay, this is the best show on gardening EVER! Below is a promo clip for the series.

She’s all about self sustainable living in an urban environment. It also helps that not only is she smart, and talented, but she’s very easy on the eyes. :) I’ve listed thirteen episode clips for you viewing enjoyment, there are many more that can be found here

I know the bicycling series I was writing for Green Monday was preempted by the Green It carnival last week, but with me heading to GCLS con tomorrow, I felt the need to talk about the place I will be staying while I’m in Phoenix. Be patient, there is a link between all of this and the purpose of green Monday, I swear.

Green Monday: Cycling pt 1, Fitting a Bike

  • Jul. 14th, 2008 at 3:18 PM

I’ve really been thinking about the idea of getting a bicycle and using it (to start with) for shorter errands and trips. I’ll admit the raising gas prices is one reason, the environmental impact another, but a big reason is also that weighing in now at 157 (a 30 lb loss since Feb) it’s time to step up the fitness part of my day so I can have that nummy Culvers custard guilt free. :)

Okay, I admit, health is a good part of my reason too, even though living in Wisconsin the months it’s warm enough to get on a cycle is limited. So, with all of that in mind, I’ve been doing some research on buying, riding, and maintaining a cycle. There’s so much info, I think I will talk about bikes in several steps over a few posts. This first one will be about bike fitting.

I noticed on my trip to New Orleans last weekend was that there wasn’t a lot of options available at the hotel for recycling or other things I might have done at home to leave a gentler footprint on my visit. That got me thinking. What things as responsible travelers can we do to be respectful guests when we are in a new place for a stay?

Green Monday: Natural hair Removal - Moom

  • Apr. 28th, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Gaia2
I’m a bit torn on the issue of hair removal. My eyebrows are bushier than I’d like, so I admit to having those waxed on occasion. Yeah, it’s a vanity thing, it's silly I know. I’m not sure on the leg waxing issue (I never do my yoni area, though if I had a gal with a preference I might), since I never wax/shave my legs in the winter, though with all the cons this summer (and the treat of swimming suit season) its something I’ve debated. If I was going to get a bit of waxing in, and with the thoughts of being environmentally friendly while doing it, I would use this…

Even though my biggest issue with Earth Day is that it should be EVERY day, I thought it might be fun to share with you some of the “Green Monday” post I’ve done over the past few months in case some of the might be useful to you, as well as some other earth friendly articles worth reading.

Saturday night was an interesting experience. Spring Equinox ritual the day of a snow storm. Good thing we were inside. It’s god to know I’m not the only one we I waaaaay ready for spring. We are all itching to leave the dark time and join the light. I look at my pitiful yard, knowing it’ll be weeks before I can do much than clean it up. I admit I’ve never been too fond of snow to begin with, and this year we got a lot of it.

I want warmth, I want greens, and want life. So many people in out community have lost people they loved this winter. I am ready to leave behind the season of rest and death and dance in my garden this year. Lest couple years I’ve had little time to dedicate to my garden area, but not this year. I vow that this year will great me with dark dirt, hard work, lush greenery, and a wonderful harvest. My five year old daughter is excited to help mommy create the garden, and I’m hoping my son will want to help as well.

Somethings coming, and health update

  • Mar. 10th, 2008 at 6:45 PM
Was Thinking
Well, I got some big news coming this week so keep posted. Besides that, it’s been a crazy day, but wanted to update ya’ll with my weigh in this week. In less than a month I’ve gone from 184 to 169 as of this morning. So, I’m feeling pretty good. 13 lbs, not bad, and my daily menu is more healthy. It helps that I am not forgetting to eat as often, making myself keep my metab up.
