Minneapolis and Wolverine

Minneapolis is a great place from what I can tell from my trip this weekend, sort of like a really big version of the east side of Milwaukee spread out. The architecture was fun and obviously folks here really take their visual and performance art seriously. I had a great brunch at Catherine Lundoff’s home with several folks from the area and had a great time. I wish I lived closer.

The readings were disappointing though. The reading was supposed to be at 2pm on Sunday but we found out later the May Day parade was happening so the reading was rescheduled to 5:30, a message that obviously didn’t get through to all the promo sources. We decided just in case to run two readings, one at 2pm and one at 5:30, we got three people at each.

At the first reading it was a local artist and a kid there for a school assignment with her mother. During the second reading it was two friends of my co reader and a customer at the store that found out about the reading at the last minute. Disappointing, but Linda and I still read and did our best to keep those there entertained. I’m hoping to make another trip back to True Colors Bookstore on a day there’s not a big local even going on to see if we have better luck with a group reading.

One another note my son and I went to see Wolverine Origins tonight and it was intense. Sure much of it isn’t part of canon I’ve seen dealt with but it wasn’t have to settle into the story as once possible way things could’ve happened. It certainly helps that I’m a big fan of the character Wolverine to begin with, and of action movies. Action was something this movie had no lacking of. It would’ve been nice if a far less of the cool characters introduced in this movie got killed off, but then Logan friend are known for having very short life spans.

Now, I admit there were a few other things I had issue with during the movie, and I may talk about those another day when there’s less chance of spoiling things for my friends who haven’t seen the movie yet. High art this movie isn’t, but then high art isn’t what most of us who are super hero movie goers want from Marvel and their associates. Lots of characters have cameos, some who even survive to be allies of enemies later. I could easily be convinced to see this again.

Magic Chat: A Princess of a Different Kind

With a young daughter to raise I think a good deal about what things I can do to support a possitive self image that will support her physical, emotional, and even magical growth. What I saw posted on one of my lists reminded me of how much things have and will still be changing.
