WW2
I’ve thought a lot about fun ways to get more active. I’m a practical person in general when it comes to exercise. If I walk, I want to be going to someplace. With the cold and snow around here lately the idea of walking when I’m doing errands and the like is far from appealing. Outside of dancing (which I can’t help it, is just fun), I’ve thought martial art might be a way to add in a extra level of activity, along with many more practical benefits. One of the styles I’ve considered is Aikido.

Not too far from us is a place called the Milwaukee Aikido Club, a non-profit Aikido instructional facility. They teach adult and children’s classes several times a week, and I went to visit their facility today.

The morning class looked to be just a few experienced students, so would I hope be good to give me a small group to work with and less of a strain socially. It’s not a big place, but the group was diverse men and women, white and PoC, which is a big plus for me. I had my son with me, and he wants to try classes too, though I think he’d been more sure if he could’ve participated (which their insurance doesn’t allow).

The initial costs are a bit steep. $85 sign up fee, about $20 for the uniform, plus the initial monthly class fee of $30 for me. My son’s cost are less, which is good, though all together it does add up to around $170 all things considered. Quite a chunk out of our budget. I’d be able to go to ass many classes as I want, but there’s only one kids class for my son’s age group. My daughter can’t go for another year it seems.

The reason I thought about Aikido is that unlike Tao Kwan Do or Karate, which is heavily taught around here, it’s a soft art, more about movement and defense than attack. I’m not saying I’d not jump at the chance to take something like Jeet Kune Do or Capoeira (both styles I’ve been fascinated with for years, even though neither is a soft art), but my options are limited where I live.

Here are some examples I’ve found of Aikido…

Well, if I can scrape together the cash in the next week or two, I’ll let ya’ll know how I like the classes. In the meantime I am also looking at other things to learn to keep active, and even hoping to find some second hand videos to get me started. I know if I can find a way to make getting active fun, I’m more likely to make is a regular part of my life.
