Amaterasu
I remember seeing the original “Hairspray” movie in 1988 after it just came out. I was doing RHPS in Chicago and our whole cast went to see it. So when I heard there was a new “Hairspray” movie, I didn’t know what to think about it. Last week I saw it for the first time, and I LOVED IT!!! This is official my favorite movie from 2007. I want to see the musical on stage too now. Warning, this is very long, but I hope ya’ll will enjoy it.

Nikki Blonsky was perfect as the sweet if not a little naive Tracy Turnblad, and she has an amazing voice.

John Travolta blew me away as Traci’s mom, Edna Turnblad, the role originated by the one of a kind Divine. How John T danced so well in all that latex and heels, I don’t know. Heck, I can’t dance in heels now.

Christopher Walken was hilarious as Wilbur Turnblad.

As Penny Pingleton they cast Amanda Bynes, and after seeing her in the role, I can’t imagine anyone who could have done it better.

Michelle Pfeiffer was wondrously glamorous and evil as Velma von Tussle, I loved hating her as should be true with any well done villain.

I cracked up when I saw the original actor who played Wilbur Turnblad, Jerry Stiller, return to play Mr. Pinky or Mr. Pinky’s Heavy Hideaway.

James Marsden danced and sung like a young Dave Clark in his portal of the sexy show host Corny Collins. I admit, I had to watch the movie twice (not much or a hardship sine the day we rent it I think I watched this movie a dozen times) to get over seeing him as Cyclops. Now next time I watch Xmen I may have Corny Collins flashbacks.

Brittany Snow was a great match as Amber von Tussle

Link Larkin was played by a very sexy actor by the name of Zac Efron.

I could go one and on about all the great performances I saw and how engaged I was by them, but I really have to say just a couple more things.

Hotter than hot was Elijah Kelley and the dancing and singing while playing the part of Seaweed. Wow. I’m with Penny on this one. This guy is smokin’. He really had going with the song he sang (Run and Tell That), “The blacker the berry the sweeter the fruit…the darker the chocolate the richer the taste.” ***nod nod*** I’m with on that one man.

And then, the sweet cream on top of an already delicious pie of entertainment, was of course Queen Latifah who played Motormouth Maybelle. OH, yes, she was "Big, Blonde and Beautiful", with a voice like honey warmed over a slow fire. Yeah, I admit it, I am totally into her. Frikken amazing performer and a complete Nubian goddess.

Okay, now that I have totally gushed over this movie lets move onto the Thursday Thirteen. “Thirteen of the most memorable quotes from the 2007 version of Hairspray” I was gonna set up the quotes with the scene, but I decided if you haven’t seen this movie you must stop what you are doing RIGHT NOW and go rent a copy, buy a copy, whatever it takes to get it, and watch Hairspray.

Watch it, I’ll wait…

Okay, ready for the quotes now?

“Thirteen Quotes from Moon's Fav 2007 Movie...Hairspray”

1) Corny Collins: [singing] Who cares about sleep when you can snooze in school? You'll never get to college but you'll sure look cool!

2) Penny Pingleton: Without that show I have nothing!
Prudy Pingleton: Having nothing builds character!

3) Velma Von Tussle: 'Detroit sound?' What's that? The cries of people being mugged?

4) Velma Von Tussle: They're just kids, that's why we have to steer them in the white direction.
Corny Collins: [pause] RIGHT direction?
Velma Von Tussle: Isn't that what I said?
(don’t you just love to hate her?)

5) Edna Turnblad: If you want to be famous, learn how to take blood out of car upholstery. That's a skill you can take right to the bank.

6) Corny Collins: Velma, isn’t this where it’s all heading anyway? Now you can fight it, or you can rock out to it!

7) Edna Turnblad: If you protest you'll be in files! You'll be on lists! J. Edgar Hoover will still be wire-tapping your cold body in the grave.

8) Velma Von Tussle: Incredible! I could do a fan dance with a lettuce leaf and you would remain completely obtuse!

9) Prudy Pingleton: [about Tracy, who was just on the news] You see? You see! If I let you leave the house right now, you'd be in prison, fighting whores for cigarettes.

10) Penny Pingleton: Oh, no!
Tracy Turnblad: What?
Penny Pingleton: Your hair deflated!
Tracy Turnblad: Let it. It was just a symbol of my conformity to the man.
Penny Pingleton: You are so tough.

11) Edna Turnblad: You can't eat? Well, come on in and worry with us. I'll make you some pork.

12) Tracy Turnblad: I think I've kind of been in a bubble... thinking that fairness was gonna just happen. It's not. People like me are gonna have to get up off their fathers' laps and go out and fight for it.

13) (and the BEST sequence of all)

Motormouth Maybelle: [to Seaweed and Penny] Oh, so this is love? [pauses, then smiles]
Well, love is a gift, a lot of people don't remember that. So, you two better brace yourselves for a whole lotta ugly comin' at you from a neverending parade of stupid.
Penny Pingleton: [deadpans] So, you've met my mom?

Bonus

Corny Collins: Live television, there’s nothing like it.

‘Cause I can’t get enough of this movie, ***grin***, here’s something special for ya.
(can anyone guess how many time I watched this rockin’ vid?

And speakin’ of rockin’

And for a bit of Queenly goodness…

MOTORMOUTH
Bring on that pecan pie
Pour some sugar on it
Sugar don't be shy

Scoop me up a mess
Of that chocolate swirl
Don't be stingy,
I'm a growing girl

I offer big love
With no apology
How can I deny the world
The most of me

I am not afraid
To throw my weight around
Pound by pound by pound

Because i'm
Big, blonde and beautiful
There is nothin' 'bout me
That's unsuitable

No one wants a meal
That only offers the least
When girl we're servin' up
The whole damn feast

Slice off a piece
Of that hog head cheese
Then take a look inside
My book of recipes

Now, don't you sniff around
For something fluffy and light
I need a man who brings
A man-size... Appetite

I'll use a pinch of sugar
And a dash of spice
I'll let ya lick the spoon
Because it tastes so nice

I'll keep it in my oven
'Til it's good and hot
Keep on stirring til it hits the spot
Because i'm...

Big, blonde and beautiful
There's nothin' 'bout us that's unsuitable
Why sit in the bleachers
Timid and afraid
When Edna,
You can be your own parade!

They say that
Black is whack
And big ain't in
Well that's just bull

Cause ladies big is back
And as for black
It's Beautiful

All shapes and sizes
Follow me
Who wants a twig
When you can have the whole tree

You could have turned all that into numerous T13s, none of which I'd have gotten tired of reading!

I haven't seen it yet; I think I've got it on our Netflix queue. If it's not there, I don't know why, but I'll definitely move it up higher the next time I log in.

Happy T13, babe!

A Personal Note from Holly
I LOVED Hairspray and have seen it twice now. I wish the Golden Globes were doing to be broadcast cause I feel bad for Nicky as I'm sure she'll win.

And thank you for visiting my TT-13!

Yeah, that was sad to hear, but it's good the actors are supporting the writers. Nicky has to win, she was sooooo amazing. You poor dear, only twice? *wink*

The old version and the new are very very different, though I think the heart of the fight for equality is the same. They do focus more on Edna in this version, but in a very satifing way.

The original was a comedy mostly, this movie is based on the musical. Great dancing and songs.

Queen Latifah was the cream on top for this version of the movie...you did RHPS, as in Rocky Horror Picture Show? I am so envious...but on to other things.
My daughter is in love with this movie so we now own it....she loves Zac Effron.

My T13 is up:

Yeah, I am determined to find myself a copy asap. My kids loved this movie two and at 4 and 8 getting them to agree on anything is a challange.

Yep, I did RHPS for several years. I did mostly Frank (I was the first female Frank in the Chicago theartes as was my understanding), Janet, and Columbia, though my first love was always the part I never got to play regurally...Magenta.

RHPS
That is really awesome, I always wanted to go to Chicago to see an interactive version of the film...in college I dressed as Columbia or Magenta for our interactive midnight showings. I am an RHPS nut.

Micheyla got the movie for Christmas, but Walmart usually has the best deals for the movies.

I loved the original and hesitated to watch the remake, but after your enthusiastic and glowing review I'm gonna add it to my 'must see' list.

My favorite quote:: "If you protest you'll be in files! You'll be on lists! J. Edgar Hoover will still be wire-tapping your cold body in the grave. " Isn't that what Homeland Security is all about?

I'll look into the moment I get a chance.

Yeah, that's the big reason I didn't see it all this time. Personally after the response the TT got today I think the producer of Hairspray need to pay me a commision of something for all the PR I got them :)

Maybe we can get together and watch it. The kids even love it too. If I get my copy this weekend maybe I can go without it long enough to loan it to you without going through withdrawl. :)

Much as I respect your opinions and admire you tremendously.... I have to confess I didn't like this movie all that much. I was curious to see John Travolta in drag, and I was very impressed with his performance. And Christopher Walken was excellent. But for all that, I didn't finish the DVD. Sorry!
